TETAC
Phase II (1996-Present) OPVA APS In March 1997 the National Arts
Education Consortium (NAEC) selected 35 Arts Partner Schools (APS),
five of which are located in Ohio, to take part in the Transforming
Education Through the Arts Challenge . These 35 schools accepted
the challenge to demonstrate that comprehensive arts education promotes
student achievement in the arts and can serve as a viable focal
point for school reform. The five Ohio schools selected are:
- Newton D. Baker Elementary
School of Arts, Cleveland,Ohio
- Elida High School,
Elida, Ohio
- Fair Arts IMPACT Alternative
Elementary School, Columbus,Ohio
- Malabar Middle School,
Mansfield,Ohio
- Windermere Elementary
School, Upper Arlington, Ohio
OPVA's work with the
Arts Partner Schools is funded by the Getty Education Institute
for the Arts and the Annenberg Foundation. Additional support is
being provided by the Ohio Arts Council, the Department of Art Education
at The Ohio State University with required matching funds from each
school. These funds provide services to the selected schools in
the areas of professional development, curriculum development, assessment
of student achievement, and technical asistance.
All five schools are
working to achieve whole school reform. Each works to reform its
program in ways that will support collaborative teacher planning
to integrate comprehensive arts in every part of the curriculum.
Through collaborative planning and professional development, the
schools and the Faculty Committee for Collaborative School Reform
(FCCSR), a committee of the Department of Art Education at The Ohio
State University, work to:
1) integrate the study
of art into disciplines in the curriculum
2) assess student achievement
in the arts and other disciplines
3) utilize technology
to create communities of student and teacher learners.
