Elida High School

Curriculum Units

Elida High School is a rural school serving 9-12 grade students in the Elida Public School District. Its mission is based on the conviction that a comprehensive arts education program will help meet the needs of their students, staff, and community and will ultimately promote higher student achievement. The school has actively encouraged the implementation of comprehensive arts education reform by providing financial support for teachers to design and implement comprehensive arts education curriculum and materials to support these efforts.

There is also an ongoing history of reform efforts at Elida. Through Venture Capital funds for staff development and strong district support, the teachers have had the opportunity to dialogue about curriculum and to begin exploring innovative teaching strategies, scheduling options, teaming structures, and technology applications. The school is experimenting with a number of nontraditional programs, such a flexible groupings, dyads, and learning beyond the school walls. Additionally, through School Net funds, Elida has been able to upgrade the high school network, computer labs, and Internet access.

The Elida Arts Partner School (APS) Leadership Team is comprised of one of these nontraditional programs. The ARTiculation Team   is comprised of teachers representing language arts, science, math, social studies and the visual arts. The team has the same 125 ninth grade students in common. During APS professional development the ARTiculation Team  focused its first year's efforts on designing integrated comprehensive arts curriculum. This curriculum focusing on the theme "People That Make a Difference" helped students explore the concepts of hero and celebrity. The ARTiculation Team worked collaboratively to design and implement this curriculum that will integrate these concepts through the arts into the other disciplines.
