Windermere Elementary School

Curriculum Unit: The American Civil War

Curriculum Unit: We Are Community

Windermere is a suburban, upper-economic, elementary school in the Upper Arlington City School District. The Windermere faculty and staff believe that education is a shared responsibility of family, children, school, and community. Central to this purpose are three goals: (1) to enhance each child's self-concept; (2) to instill attitudes that promote life-long learning; and (3) to prepare each child with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed in an ever-changing world. To reach these goals, the Windermere faculty has defined the curriculum core in terms of four "C's": communication, that is, listening, reading, speaking, and writing; critical thinking, that is, art, mathematics, music, physical education, problem solving, science, and social studies; computer technology; and collaboration.

Windermere currently has access to many technology resources which allow teachers and students to communicate with others at a distance, create materials, access resources from a remote site, or combine visual, textural and auditory information into multimedia learning experiences. The Windermere staff has also demonstrated a sustained commitment to systemic school reform. They have secured a Venture Capital Grant to design, implement, and evaluate collaborative planning models.

Windermere's Arts Partner School Plan for the first year focused on the development of integrated comprehensive arts curriculum centered around the theme "Our Back Yard and Beyond." The Windermere teachers involved in APS professional development activities identified and explored the "big ideas" or concepts within this theme. Some of the big ideas that the teachers identified were exploration, self-awarness and moving from what you know to something new. The teachers worked collaboratively to design and implement curriculum that integrated these ideas and concepts into all the disciplines. As one example, the art teachers used paintings of Philip Evergood, Auguste Renoir, and Andrew Wyeth to help their students come to understand the diversity in each other's backyards.
