The California Senate endorsed a bill Thursday that would require social-science textbooks, beginning in 2012, to include the historical contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. Supporters say the measure would help create a more hospitable climate for gay and lesbian students, while opponents question the need to mention a historical figure's sexual orientation.
