Dr. Sanders’ is author of Founders: A social history of a community art school, and founding principal of the Arts-Based Elementary School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. His research has been published in a variety of art and education texts, including chapters for Fariello and Owen’s Objects and meaning: Readings that challenge the norm, Lampela and Check’s From our voices: Art educators and artists speak out about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered issues, and Sloan and Sears’ Democratic curriculum theory & practice. Recent articles include essays in the International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education, and Journal of Social Theory of Art Education. Sanders academic presentations include performances and installations of arts-based education research at regional, national and international conferences.
Dr. Sanders is co-coordinator of the Caucus on Social Theory of Art Education of the National Art Education Association, board member and historian for the Curriculum and Pedagogy Conference , vice president of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered Issues Caucus of the National Art Education Association, and is an associate editor for the International Journal of Gay and Lesbian Issues in Education. During his 26 years of nonprofit arts agency leadership, has organized a dozen symposia, including events for the American Craft Council, Surface Design Association and North Carolina Art Education Association. He has served as a board member of the Arkansas Arts Council and Arts North Carolina, and as a grants panelist/reader for art, education and museum funding programs a half-dozen state arts councils. His teaching experiences include classroom art instruction for grades K-12 students, interdisciplinary and multicultural in-service workshops for public school teachers across the state of North Carolina, and weaving/surface design instructor for teen adult learners in three southeastern states.
